Governance

On behalf of all the governing board of Wales Primary School can I welcome you to this section of the website.

Governors join the board from a variety of sources, some by invitation because of their specific skills and knowledge, and others by election (parent governors).

Some of you may wonder what governors do. First of all, everyone is a volunteer.  Contrary to rumour there is no payment for this work.  Governors can claim certain expenses, but in the long history of the governing body no-one has ever claimed a penny.

The governing board has three core functions:

  • Setting the vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school;
  • Holding the head teacher to account for the school’s educational performance;
  • Ensuring that the school budget is effectively managed and that money is well spent.

Obviously, there are many challenges contained within these three areas, but training is available in the myriad of skills needed by a governor.  We have a sub-committee structure dealing with Finance, Developing Excellence and Staffing, all chaired very effectively by people with specific skills and experience in these areas.

If anyone needs some advice on what the practical issues of governance are I will be happy to help.  I am in school regularly if you want a chat, or I can be contacted via the school office.

Equally, if you have any special skills or expertise that you think might be helpful to the governing board please let me know.  We have the opportunity to co-opt people onto the governing board in such circumstances.

I would like to send my best wishes to all of you and your children.  We will all be doing our best to ensure that they achieve the best that they are capable of in our happy and supportive environment.
